Project Description
The villages of Amatopo and Curuni opened their school buildings in 2022 and 2023, respectively. To enhance the education process, the traditional leadership of these indigenous communities has requested the installation of electricity in the schools. While the government plans to invest in energy infrastructure starting in 2027, there is an urgent need for interim solutions.
This project aims to install small stand-alone solar energy systems, enabling schools to have access to lighting, internet, and essential devices. This will not only improve daytime education for children but also support adult education programs in the evenings.
By implementing sustainable energy solutions, this initiative ensures that students and community members can benefit from continuous learning opportunities while bridging the gap until government infrastructure is in place.
Project Implementation
Forest93 coordinates the execution of the project with vendors and communities.
Rotary Amsterdam West supports the procurement of solar equipment to power the school lighting, charging of laptops and internet connection.
Beneficiaries
70+ children attending the public schools in Amatopo and Curuni
40+ adults in Amatopo and Curuni who could use the electricity to charge their devices and install their community loudspeaker to convey information and messages to all families.
Goal
Install solar-powered electricity for the schools in indigenous communities Amatopo and Curuni, in the South-West of Suriname.
Why Dean Gorré supports this project:
“Together with Forest93 and the Tareno community we have built two schools, in Amatopo and Curuni. For the last two years, children in these villages can attend education. Now, we are ready for the next phase, connecting the schools to solar power to install laptops, internet, and lighting. “
