Project
Set up a bakery in the village of Kwamalasamutu to offer bread for school children.
The village of Kwamalsamutu is remotely located in the South of Suriname. This relatively large indigenous village is inhabited by the Tareno tribe, which currently belongs to the inhabitants with the nation’s lowest levels of income, educational levels, healthcare, and opportunities for entering into the labor force.
Currently, the village lacks a bakery because a previous attempt to set up a bakery by UNICEF in 2012 failed due to poor project implementation, in particular lack of ownership of the local beneficiaries.
A recent socio-economic study by GGS (2023) showed that families currently can go up to 3 days without food because destroyed crop harvests due to climate change (floodings, heat, and plant diseases) and lack of funds to gather food from other places, like the capital city Paramaribo.
By setting up a local bakery where people will bake bread based on the locally available cassava flour, which has been growing quite consistently by almost all families over the last 40 years.
The bakery will provide a more nutritious meal than bare cassava becausefermenting the flour (with yeast) will add nutrients to the bread. This will allow children to have access to at least one nutritious meal a day.

Project Implementation
Stichting Tewe Kwamalasamutu, a community-based organization of the Tareno tribe, will be responsible for the building, staffing and operation of the bakery.
Forest93 Ambassador Byciel Watsaam will deliver bakery training to the community.
Forest93 will be responsible for project oversight and financial reporting.
